MANAGER CALLS NEW STORE ‘CROWN JEWEL’

Believes Bass Pro Shops to be a ‘Perfect Fit’ for San Antonio

San Antonio, TexasRoland Castillo, named recently as the store manager of the new Bass Pro Shops opening in Texas, calls the San Antonio store location the “jewel in the crown” in the Bass Pro Shops retail family.  Located at the intersection of I-10 and Loop 1604, the store is situated directly across from Six Flags Fiesta Texas and is the anchor for The Rim, a 700-acre mixed use development. This is the third Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World to open in Texas.  A 4th Texas Bass Pro Shops will open in Garland in November and a 5th Texas store will open in October of next year.

“At nearly 200,000 square feet, it will easily be one of the largest retail operations in the San Antonio area and one of the larger Bass Pro Shops stores opened to date,” said Castillo.  “This store has been specially designed to reflect some of the unique features of the Hill Country and will include large natural aquariums, a waterfall, Hill Country rock formations and area wildlife,” he said.

Bass Pro Shops unique exterior and interior motifs have branded them as award-wining, visually appealing, high quality outdoor stores. Each store is uniquely designed to fit the particular area it is located using elements that incorporate the geography, ecosystems and native wildlife.  The outdoor feel is brought indoors through massive log and rock work, large indoor aquariums and water features stocked with native fish species, as well as an extensive collection of museum quality fish and wildlife mounts. Indeed, Bass Pro Shops stores feature over 3,500 antiques and artifacts, up to 400 trophy fish and wildlife mounts and many grand murals and historic photos paying tribute to the area’s great outdoor heritage.

Another Bass Pro Shops hallmark is their dedication to conservation which Castillo believes is a perfect fit for San Antonio. “I am excited to be in San Antonio to enjoy the new growth in the area but even with that growth San Antonio has been able to conserve it’s natural beauty—something I have always loved about Texas,” said Castillo. “Conservation is one of the areas Bass Pro Shops has always had a strong commitment to and I look forward to helping promote a working partnership with our local groups and outdoor organizations,” he continued.

Castillo brings with him a broad base of experience in management, having previously served as both regional and district managers for several national retail operations. The move to Bass Pro Shops brings him home to the San Antonio area where he attended both high school and college. Both of his sons are also attending Texas universities as well.

From fishing area lakes and rivers to surf and bay fishing at the coast, Castillo is an avid outdoorsman who is also likely to be seen teeing off at the local golf courses. With that in mind, Castillo is looking forward to another Bass Pro Shops tradition. “Our store will be very active in promoting programs that foster outdoor education, outdoor skills workshops and programs for youth and families,” he said. “Bass Pro Shops not only sells outdoor recreational products but is also committed to helping educate individuals on how to use them, inspiring people to love, enjoy and conserve the great outdoors for future generations,” he continued.

Castillo will head up a staff of approximately 250-300 associates that all share a strong passion and knowledge about the outdoors—people that are skilled in the areas they work. “Customers will be able to tap into that knowledge and commitment when they need information about a product and its use,” he said. “Our staff is here to help our customers enjoy the outdoors, develop new skills or improve ones they may already have. This is one of the things that sets Bass Pro Shops apart from so many other retailers,” Castillo said.

A Special Evening for Conservation is planned as a pre-opening event Wednesday, October 18th followed by the official Grand Opening Thursday, October 19th. More information will be available at a later date regarding those activities.
