Port Isabel / South Padre Island Fishing Report Archives

By:  Capt. Jack Barton

February, 2007 October 27, 2006 June 25, 2006

February, 2007 - Fishing in the Lower Laguna Madre is picking up again. Limits of redfish have been normal for most guides during the month of February. Fish have been holding north of marker 67 on both the east side of the channel and the west side. Trout numbers are getting a bit better but still not in full swing yet. However the few trout being caught are running around 18" and up. My guess is that trout fishing will be excellent in April and May.

October 27, 2006 - Fishing for redfish on the Lower Laguna Madre has been excellent. Redfish have been holding from Stovers Point to the Cullen house in large numbers.

During cold fronts Gas Well flats and the Three Island area has been going off with reds and a few trout. The trout fishing is really slow now, but I'm sure they will be back in big numbers by March. If not sooner.

If your looking for some tasty fish the jetties are full of mangro snappers and a few snook, if the weather is calm enough to get a boat out there.

High surf is the report for the next few days and a person could end up with a boat on the rocks. So use caution when fishing the jetties. If the swells are big just get back in the bay and catch some redfish.

June 25, 2006 - Got up early this morning and headed out on my charter to the Intercoastal. We ran 30 minutes to the north and started fishing at 6:30 am. By 7:20 we had our limit on trout. The largest one was 24" with a few more over 20.

The secret to catching fish this time of year is to leave the dock early. The fish bite like crazy for a while then usually turn off by 9:00 am.

We then took off from Intercoastal and headed out to the Jetties for Kingfish. (about a 35 minute run.) The Kings were there but I forgot to bring wire leader. Kings will cut through 100# mono like butter. We landed none.

If you want to catch some Kingfish wait for a calm day when the water is blue around the jetties. 12# test is good enough to land them but you must have wire leader. Small Rattle Trap lures work great. Troll them slow or just cast and retrieve.

Flounder are starting to show up along the Three Island area and the Intercoastal. Look for small channels and deeper holes.
