Fall Fly Fishing Fest

Last Fall, James our technical guy got an e-mail from Ken Caid of the Texas Hill Country River Region inviting us to a fly fishing event on the Nueces River at the Chalk Bluff Park camp ground about 15 miles north of Uvalde on Hwy. 55. We decided this would be a good outing for us and a fun trip for Madison my grandson. There wasn’t a huge turnout but those that showed were enthusiastic and ready to fish. There were about 25 ready and willing fly fishers.

For all of you anglers that are new to Texas, the hill country area to the West and North West of San Antonio holds some of the most beautiful river settings in the state. Rivers such as the Nueces, Frio, Guadalupe, Llano, and Pedernales have many, many miles of absolutely pristine and crystal clear fishing waters. These beautiful rivers are full of native Guadalupe bass, bluegill, rock bass, catfish, crayfish, and Rio Grande perch. All of these species are great fishing targets for the young beginning angler or the experienced fly fisher. Much of the access to the rivers has to be through private land with the permission of the owner or through state parks or private campgrounds that welcome overnighters for a nominal fee. Most of these campgrounds have all of the necessary amenities for a very rewarding camping experience.

We had a great afternoon and my grandson really enjoyed himself even though he didn’t get to fish. He knows we will be back several times this coming year and it is really good fishing in the Spring when the fish are spawning and are aggressive. Hope to see some of ya’ll out there in the Hill Country rivers.
