25th Annual
Ladies Kingfish Tournament
August 11-13 2006

Well the wind was up a little but it didn’t stop the ladies from fishing on Saturday the 12th of August. The 25th annual LKT was held on South Padre Island and what a bevy of beauties and what a barge full of fish. These gals can hold their own with the best of them in the bay or offshore. There were 263 anglers on 107 boats that caught over 1200 pounds of fish. This was a new record for the LKT. Yes the wind was blowing but daybreak was beautiful as usual and no one worried about their hair. They were there for some serious and competitive fishing.

The

Captains

Meeting

Friday evening started with the captains meeting and then a social event with drawings and door prizes. There was an excellent buffet catered by Jake’s Catering, plenty of socializing and all of this was a great warm up for the fishing day ahead.

Even though you prepare for an event such as this for days , there is always something left to do just before you can leave.

There were a lot of boats on the water and the conditions with the high winds were tough but persistence will usually pays off if you have a good captain. Candice Hickman, fishing for the FishNet Daily News team, was fishing on Capt. Jack Barton’s boat and under his guidance, met with good success. Candice missed the fourth place redfish trophy by only .10 of a pound. That’s not bad for a fifteen year old girl. Her catch for the day included two redfish and four trout.
Towards the end of the day the lines begin to form at the dock and weigh-in station. The crowds have come to watch the boats unload and to see what has been caught.
Even though you are a bit wind blown you try to look good for the audience and the other anglers and the weigh-in volunteers. This is picture taking time once again.

Sunday at 11:00 o’clock they had the awards ceremony for the winners. There were twenty nine trophies given to some very deserving women. The trophies were renditions of the species of fish specific to the fish caught by the lady anglers. The original paintings were done by local artist Dinah Bowman.

The Winners Are !!!

Off Shore Division Grand Champion

Other Winners

At every tournament, fishing show, boat show or other event we attend, I am always looking for a good humanistic story. Some thing that has a good side to it and leaves a good feeling behind after reading it. This story is for me and I hope for Gary. Seeing Gary at the TIFT and the LKT brought back some fond memories of some good times. There are fond memories of his family, a trip pulling their 18 foot Sterncraft to Matzatlan, a goose hunting trip with his dad and brother, a few quail and dove trips, and several fishing trips. His mother and dad very kind to a young man trying to get his act together ( me ). It was good to see him looking so well and I look forward to coming down and filming him doing his thing with the Snook. God bless and keep you safe my friend. See you soon.
